Designing a website

Before we start...

The internet penetrates all walks of life directly or indirectly starting from our personal life through business to office administration. Due to fast developing technologies and also continuously changing habits, the emphasis today is no longer on sheer presence but rather on content and service. In other words simply creating a website is not enough.You have to fill it with content,  with easily accessible, useful pieces of information linked to practical functions. A well-designed and well- thought-out website very often plays a keyrole in the dynamic development or in the complete success of a community or a company.A website may have a number of aims, here are a few examples (not all the possible ones)

  • introducing a company
  • forming a community
  • disseminating general knowledge
  • offering service
  • introducing and promoting a given product
  • introducing and selling products (e-commerce)
  • etc.

Before we start making a new website or renewing an old one, we have to be clear about our objectives because they influence certain aspects of website design (e.g.structure, design, functions etc.)

Basic website functions

The most frequently used functions and services of websites can traditionally be grouped into the following areas:
  • Gallery
    • There is a saying ’A picture is worth 1000 words’. A gallery is a very practical way not only to show the company or the company’s products but also to publish photos taken at different events. It makes our website more eye-catching and colourful.
  • Forum
    • A forum can have several aims. First it is an excellent method for forming a community who is interested in a given topic, and can also serve as a place where frequently asked questions can be answered, comments can be made. The former makes our website a living phenomena,  the latter option makes it useful and helpful.
  • Blog
    • A blog allows users to publish shorter or longer comments. Blogs are becoming increasingly popular. It makes our website living and up-to-date.
  • Webforms
    • Forms ease our business life. The different fields, lists and options make the ordering of a product and also enquiring about the product more clearly arranged and precise. It takes the customer less time to order things with the help of forms and it takes the manufacturer or service provider less time to process the order.
  • Dealing with multilingual content
    • A multilingual website makes it possible for us to attract a larger, international target audience. A Change Language Module allows visitors to change languages on the wesite and on the administration interface, it helps one to maintain content in different languages seperately.
  • The designer’s interface
    • This ensures the direct maintainance of the different content on the website (texts belonging to different menubars, pictures, tables or content belonging to different modules e.g. uploading pictures to galleries, deleting them etc).

Creating a website
  • Planning the website -fixing the requirements about the website which typically contains the following elements: the role of the website, the list of necessary modules, ideas and considerations about design and the structure of the website.
  • Making the design- planning the image of the website. Usually two or three drafts, totally different plans are made based on the previously accepted conceptions and guidelines One of these is chosen and worked out in detail.
  • The building of the website- the final version is made of the website which is based on the planned design, accepted structure and the necessary modules.
  • Uploading content (optional): if the website contains a lot of material which has been prepared beforehand, we undertake the professional arrangement of this material even in several languages.
  • Testing and handing over – testing all the functions. First we test it ourselves, then together with our customer, in the end we hand it over to you. We include useful information and the necessary knowledge needed for maintainance.

Of course the life of a website does not end here, it only starts to live by handover. When the website is used numerous ideas may occur either about the development of the website or simply about regular maintainance, either technical or concerning content.
